Jane Austen This or That

Cordy posted this at Any Merry Little Thought, and it looked like fun, so I thought I'd give it a whirl myself!

(All photos are mine from my Instagram.)

1) Who is a cuter couple? Emma and Mr. Knightley or Jane and Mr. Bingley?

I think Jane and Mr. Bingley are much cuter.  I'm not sure I could ever call either Emma or Mr. Knightley cute, to be honest.  I'd be just a little too afraid of them.

2) You must go to tea with Mrs. Jennings or Mrs. Bennet. Who would you rather go with?

Mrs. Jennings!  I'm already married, so she'd only have my own husband to tease me about, and I am very used to that.  We are an affectionate couple, and we have withstood a great deal of teasing over the last twenty-some years.  Aside from her propensity for teasing, she makes me laugh, and I enjoy laughing.

3) Dance with Edward Ferrars or Charles Bingley?

While I like Edward Ferrars better as a person, I think Mr. Bingley would be a much more fun dancing partner.  He wouldn't mind a bit if I didn't know any of the steps, I suspect.

4) Who would you rather have as a big sister? Jane Bennet or Elinor Dashwood?

I'm too much like Elinor to want to have a sister so similar to myself, so I pick Jane :-)  Besides, she would be the nicest sister ever!

5) Worst villain? Wickham or Willoughby?

Neither -- John Thorpe!  Ugh, I loathe him so much more than either Wickham or Willoughby.  I suppose of those two, I think Willoughby is worse.

6) Take a walk with Mrs. Weston or Mrs. Gardiner?

Mrs. Gardiner!  She's an extremely sensible, kind woman and I think we would get along famously.  I like her almost as well as I like Mrs. Croft.

7) Mr. Darcy or Mr. Knightley?

Definitely Mr. Darcy.  I can never help thinking there must be something slightly wrong with Mr. Knightley's brain because he falls in love with Emma Woodhouse.

That was such a fun little tag!  If you want to do it yourself, here are the questions, for ease of copying:

1) Who is a cuter couple? Emma and Mr. Knightley or Jane and Mr. Bingley?
2) You must go to tea with Mrs. Jennings or Mrs. Bennet. Who would you rather go with?
3) Dance with Edward Ferrars or Charles Bingley?
4) Who would you rather have as a big sister? Jane Bennet or Elinor Dashwood?
5) Worst villain? Wickham or Willoughby?
6) Take a walk with Mrs. Weston or Mrs. Gardiner? (Mrs. Weston is Emma's old governess and Mrs. Gardiner is Elizabeth's aunt.)
7) Mr. Darcy or Mr. Knightley?

  1. HOW DARE YOU INSULT MR. KNIGHTLEY. (•_•) HE AND EMMA ARE THE BEST.

    1. Kendra, well, I do really like both Mr. Knightley and Emma Woodhouse in the 1996 Gwyneth Paltrow version.

    2. Have you seen the 2009 BBC version? It's amazing, and has me a confirmed fan of Mr. Knightley and Emma. :)

    3. Kendra, the one with Ramola Garai? Yup, I've seen it. I liked it okay, but not enough to buy a copy. If someone wanted me to watch it with them, I probably would, but I wouldn't seek it out again myself.

  2. I'm going to have to go with Kendra on this one...the amount of Emma hate in this post is completely unacceptable. XD (Seriously, though: I love Emma and Mr. Knightley, but I can definitely see where you're coming from!)

Mr. Bingley would totally be a fun dancing partner!

I'd have to go with Jane Bennet as a sister as well, for the same reason you did! My real life sister is kind of a mix between Marianne and Jane, though, so it's almost like I already have Jane Bennet as a sister...

    1. Samantha, and here I thought I was being quite polite and nice about Emma and Mr. Knightley...

Your sister sounds lovely and sweet!

  3. 1) Who is a cuter couple? Emma and Mr. Knightley or Jane and Mr. Bingley?
I totally agree with you there, cute doesn't describe Knightley and Emma at all.
    2) You must go to tea with Mrs. Jennings or Mrs. Bennet. Who would you rather go with? Mrs. Bennet. I'm rather tired of being grilled about my life
    3) Dance with Edward Ferrars or Charles Bingley? Bingley, he makes everyone feel great, with Edward it would be two awkward people
    4) Who would you rather have as a big sister? Jane Bennet or Elinor Dashwood? I'm the oldest, so trying to imagine an older sister is hard enough. I'm like Marianne though. I'm really not sure.
    5) Worst villain? Wickham or Willoughby? Of the two, Wickham, he has no qualms and uses everyone and lies. Willoughby has some sense of wrong. Of all JA books, Henry Crawford, that man doesn't understand "no."
    6) Take a walk with Mrs. Weston or Mrs. Gardiner? (Mrs. Weston is Emma's old governess and Mrs. Gardiner is Elizabeth's aunt.) Mrs. Gardiner seems rather more astute, so her.
    7) Mr. Darcy or Mr. Knightley?
Hmm. I totally agree with you on Mr. Knightley choosing Emma. I didn't realize you didn't like Emma either. But I don't really care for Mr. Darcy as a suitor personally (no sense of humor), and Mr. Knightley would have something wrong with his brain to love me too.

    1. Livia, fun answers! Yeah, I'm absolutely not a Henry Crawford fan either.

I have to agree with Austen that, in Emma Woodhouse, she wrote a character that I don't actually like. She's meddlesome and bossy and smug. Yes, she does learn a few lessons along the way, but I don't want to be friends with her, if that makes sense? EXCEPT when she's played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Then, I quite like her -- she's much kinder and less self-absorbed, I think?

  4. Looking at these pictures almost makes me want to start a bookstagram of my own!

Ugh, John Thorpe! He is one of my least favorites as well.

    1. MC, Instagram IS a lot of fun :-) However, I will freely admit that I spend about 20 minutes every morning writing a post and answering comments, and then more time throughout the day enjoying other people's posts. And about three hours a month taking photos. So it can become very time-consuming! However, it has become a really good marketing tool for my books! So when I combine that with the fun of chatting books with other bookstagrammers and enjoying the creative outlet of figuring out different shots, I find it worth it :-) Plus, I can use my prettiest pics on my blogs too.

      Ugh, John Thorpe! The end.

  5. I love Mr. Knightly but Darcy still wins.
