The Black Moth by Georgette Heyer -- People tell me that since I like Jane Austen, I might like Heyer too, so I'm giving her a try.
With Every Letter by Sarah Sundin -- I loved her "Wings of Glory" books and have been wanting to read this for a long time.
Mark of the Cross by Judith Pella -- I read a bunch of Judith Pella's books back in high school and liked them a ton. This one is about England in the 1200s, so knights and stuff :-D
When Calls the Heart by Janette Oke -- My mom LOVED Janette Oke's books when I was young, and she owned the same edition of this one. I read a bunch of Oke's books back then, and this is the one I remember liking best, so I decided that hey, for $1, it was worth revisiting.
North to the Orient by Anne Morrow Lindbergh -- About Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh flying around the Arctic Circle.
Hour of Gold, Hour of Lead by Anne Morrow Lindbergh -- I love AML's collections of letters and journal entries. The only one I've read all the way through is Bring Me a Unicorn, so I snapped up this and the two following books because I'm eager to read more of these collections. This one is going to be sad, though, because it's from 1929-1932, which means it will involve the time when the Lindberghs' baby son was kidnapped and murdered.
Locked Rooms and Open Doors by Anne Morrow Lindbergh -- Promises to be happier than the previous one because it's got more about the Lindberghs flying, and also them moving to England.
War Within and Without by Anne Morrow Lindbergh -- This one is about WWII, so it's going to be really interesting, because that was when Charles Lindbergh took a very unpopular isolationist stance about not joining the war.
My Little House Songbook -- A collection of songs that are mentioned in Laura Ingalls Wilder's books! Complete with sheet music for the melodies :-) I think my kids will enjoy this as part of their piano lessons before long.
And yes, I said these were "part of the treasure trove." I also got a bunch of books for my kids! But they rushed away with them before I could grab a picture. I don't mind -- I'm happy they're excited about books :-)

Well the only book that I have 'acquired' this week was Grace Livingston Hill's Phoebe Deane and I didn't buy it or have it given to me, I found a place online where I can read it for free.
Erudessa, well, no, I'm not actually reading The Black Moth yet. It's now on one of my TBR shelves, and I'll get to it one of these days.

Ahhh. Reading is one of my favorite coping mechanisms too. Sometimes even a 2-minute vacation into a different world makes all the difference!

Thanks, Elizabeth! We still had our tree up the day we hit the bookstore, so I decided what better spot to snap a picture? And yes, I love that my kids love reading. My 8-year-old chows through a junior fiction novel in a few hours -- he puts me to shame. And my 5-year-old is just really starting to take off with reading herself, which is beautiful to watch. But she and my 4-year-old love to curl up and get read to still, which I love and need to do more of.
DeleteThe Little House song book is awesome. I had the same one as a kid. My uncle figured out how to adapt the music for the violin so that I could play the songs on the violin while he played the piano.

DeleteI do love Georgette Heyer. There is nothing like sinking into a world of witty repartee and regency romance when you are having a bad day. The Black Moth isn't my favorite of her books but any of them are enjoyable. She also wrote some light mysteries that I like.

Fawnabelle, yes, I have that exact problem. I now have two whole shelves (nearly an entire bookcase) dedicated to my TBR books... and they are overflowing. As in, books stacked on top and in front of other books... it's kind of terrible.

Tolkien art is a wonderful thing. I would love to someday own a copy of LOTR with illustrations by Alan Lee or John Howe!
We have that Little House songbook. When we did our Little House school year, we used that and had fun looking up the songs on Youtube and listening to them that way. Such fun music! I especially appreciate the roots to Scotland. It is such happy music. (We still like to listen to them.)

DeleteR.T. I like that analogy of publishers being like Santa Claus! I haven't read many ARCs, but it's a pretty cool process. When my kids are older and I have more reading time, I think I'll look into doing that more.
ReplyDeleteGeorgette Heyer is good. I've only read a handful of her books so far but I've liked and enjoyed most of them. The Talisman Ring is one of my favorites.
