Mailbox Monday Again

I'm linking up with Mailbox Monday again!  This week, I received a delightful surprise in the mail, a gift from my husband that he happened to see on Amazon and knew I would love:

Yes.  Brick Shakespeare.  As in, four of Shakespeare's tragedies told somewhat like a comic book, with little Lego people acting out the scenes and actual Shakespeare dialog for each panel.  It doesn't use the full texts, but it does a really great job of retelling these stories.  I haven't read the whole thing yet, just the first few acts of Hamlet (enough to see that this is not a retelling suitable for kids, so alas, my Lego-loving Sam can't read this yet).

Here's detail from one page that I thought I'd share so you could get an idea of the book's flavor:

What was in your mailbox this week?

  1. I love it! We have one of the Brick Bible editions. My kids loved the cover right off of it. But Shakespeare, too??? I'll have to take a look at that.

    2. I was looking at the Brick Bibles on Amazon -- what reading level would you say they're appropriate for? Some reviews were like, "This is not for kids," and others were like, "My six-year-old loves this!" so I was not sure.

A lot of weeks go by where I don't get any new books (which is a good thing, or our house would collapse!) But I do have another something coming in a few days too :-o A book I didn't know existed until Saturday, when I picked it up at the library on a whim. After reading 7 pages, I went and ordered my own copy because it is just amazing. More about it next Mailbox Monday if it's arrived by then!

    3. Let's just say, there are some questionable visuals in the Brick Bible that I did not know could be done with Legos.

  2. Now that sounds fantastic! I love the idea and I bet it would be fun to use with kids.

    1. I let my 7-year-old flip through it, and he said it was "too hard to figure out what's going on." I was like, "Good, cuz these are not stories for kids." Not like they're explicit or anything, but all the murder and mayhem is there, some of the rough language, and words like "incestuous" that I did not want to have to explain, lol.

  4. I love all these Lego books! I don't have any of them, but I think they'd be a lot of fun to own. Happy reading!

    1. I didn't even realize they existed before this. They're very clever! I might pick up the Shakespeare's Comedies if I can get a good price on it some time.

  5. How fun! Though that's too bad it's not quite appropriate for Sam yet. Something to look forward too!

I got a letter from my penpal! That is always still super fun, getting snail mail.

    1. I did let him flip thru it a little, and he decided it was not as fun as he'd thought. I think when he's like 12 and ready for these kinds of stories, though, he's going to dig it :-D

I love snail mail! We got a letter from a certain lad named Legolas today...

  6. Well, it is Shakespeare. Maybe it wouldn't be the same if they made it "kid-friendly." I've seen that book, though; really fun! I got something this week: the new Firefly graphic novel! Serenity: Leaves on the Wind is the title. I'm excited to read it after I finish the third back story one.

    1. Yes, exactly. It would be like the Charles and Mary Lamb retellings, which are nice, but not Shakespeare.

It's been ages since I read a Firefly graphic novel! One of Cowboy's work friends is also a fan, and she collects them, so she loaned us all hers a while ago.

    2. Well, they're usually quick reads. I'll probably read another after my January challenge reads are finished. Maybe I should review some of the graphic novels I read this year! I avoided it last year, but it could be fun.

    3. That would be fun! I read quite a few graphic novels for a while, because our public library in CT had a great collection. Here, they don't, so my reading of them has dwindled.

    4. Same with me. I was reading graphic novels frequently for a while, but my current library doesn't have many options. I have a few in my house waiting to be read, though, so I'll probably crack those open next.

    5. I only own a few -- I have a manga version of Hamlet that's awesome, and another "No Fear" graphic novel version of Hamlet I haven't read yet. And then I have five volumes of "The Essential Wolverine," which are really not graphic novels but huge, thick, delicious collections of Wolverine comic books from the '80s and '90s (I think). And now I have this Lego book :-)

    6. Well, those sound promising to me. I have a couple of Firefly titles, the second book in the Saga series, the Dollhouse one (the title might be Epitaphs...not sure right now), a version of Pride and Prejudice, and a couple of others that were sent to me as rewards from a Kickstarter campaign, I think. And if you're looking for more suggestions, I found the graphic novel version of The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho to be very good. I also have a stack of Catwoman comics from '92-'96 that I recently found and am excited to read--that was my favorite time period for her!
