A Call for Guest Writers

I'd like to include a series of guest posts in the Lord of the Rings Read-Along (which begins around Sept. 26).  If you have an idea for a LOTR-related post, say so here!  I know my hubby is writing about the economics of the Orcs (and what he's writing is way more interesting than it sounds), and James the Movie Reviewer wants to write at least one post about the books versus the movies.  (James, would be you willing to do three posts, one for each book & movie pairing?).

I think it would be especially fun to have posts highlighting individual characters.  If you have a favorite character or two (or least favorite), you could write a quick biography of them, and an explanation of why you love the character.  If you want to include a favorite photo or twelve from the movies, you're certainly welcome to do so :-)

Obviously, we've got about a month before the read-along starts, but I want to get people thinking about this now so I can post guest pieces as we go.  So comment on this post if you're interested, even if you don't have a subject in mind yet!  I can always suggest some.

  2. I'd like to do this, but not having read the books yet, I don't think I'd be able to give good perspectives on the characters. Also, I'm reading five other books right now, so I'm afraid to commit when this one isn't my top priority. :/ Speaking of which, how fast are you planning to read/post on LOTR (how many chapters a week, for instance)?

    1. Hee -- I understand! You can always change your mind, okay?

I think that I'll be able to post 2-3 chapters a week, basically one every 2-3 days. Basically, I'll read a chapter one day, and then post about it the next day -- at least, that's how I'm hoping it'll go. Some chapters are short, but others are longer and may take me 2 days to read -- I have about half an hour of reading time most days.

    1. Thanks, Clara! It's great to "meet" you, and I look forward to getting to know you! I take it you're interested in joining the Tolkien blog party and/or the LOTR read-along?

  4. I would be interested in writing a guest post. My first thought is a post about: 'Why you should read The Silmarillion, even though it's a tough book to get through', but if you want to keep it LOTR related, I would love to write about either Arwen, Eowyn or Aragorn.

    1. Awesome! I'd take any or all of those :-D The one on why you should read the Silmarillion would be cool to put toward the end of the trilogy, to encourage people (including me) to continue with Tolkien's other books. But I also think it would be nifty to have posts about the different characters, so if you'd like to do any (or all) of those three, they're not taken! You can have your pick.

    2. Alrighty! I'd like to do one or more character posts, BUT it depends on exactly when you want them posted and how busy I am. Now that the summer is really over and lots of things start up again I find myself having less time to write extra posts..... So if you could let me know your 'planning'?

    3. Well, I was thinking character posts would kind of fit in wherever we met up with the characters. I would probably put Aragorn's up when we get to Rivendell and his non-Strider self is revealed, and Arwen's would work there too, and then Eowyn's wouldn't be until we meet up with her at Edoras in TTT. Assuming we read 2 chapters a week (though we might do three, we shall see), that would put us at the end of October or beginning of November before we get to Rivendell, so would that give you enough time to work something up? You could even do a joint post on Aragorn and Arwen about their relationship, if you wanted.

  5. Hey this is Sarah. I was wondering if you'd be interested in a short piece about the journey theme in LOTR and how it relates to outdoor time. Basically the piece would relate how my hubby and I have come to love these books even more after having taken up backpacking as a hobby. Either that or relating LOTR to art (always one of my favorite topics). I don't have much time to write cause of our vacation coming up this month and opening yet another Etsy shop as an adoption fundraiser, but these topics are near and dear to my heart and I'd enjoy writing about them. Let me know what you think!

    1. Something on the journey theme would be cool! Have you heard of the Walk to Rivendell challenge? I've considered doing that myself, though never actually done it yet.

And LOTR and art is also awesome, because there's so much amazing artwork out there, from Alan Lee and John Howe to infinity and beyond. And I know that's something you specialize in yourself :-) So I guess... both would be awesome! But if you only have time for one, pick the one you'd rather write about, cuz they both sound cool to me.

    2. Sweet! What deadline are you thinking? i haven't heard of the Walk to Rivendell but I want to check it out! Thanks for letting me be a part of it all!

    3. Hmm. I have something to post in the middle of FOTR and something for the end of it and the end of TTT. Where do you think they might fit well? The middle of TTT? Assuming we get through 3 chapters a week (which may be optomistic -- we'll see), that would put us somewhere in December, I think. Does that work for you?

    4. Works great! I'll plan for getting the article(s) to you by December.

  6. Oh no, I missed this post! However, I do have posts for each of the three LOTR movie vs. books, so I should still be ready for the posting. How will I be able to post them on your blog?

    1. Fear not, James! I want your posts for the read-along, not the blog party, so you've got plenty of time, as I'm thinking that I'd post the comparison for each book when we've finished that book. That may change once I've read them, of course. I'm emailing you about this right now at the address on your blog, okay?

  7. Heya, have you got anyone doing a Bilbo Baggins post? If not, I'd be much honored to make a post for that amazingest of hobbits who, I think it's safe to say, had a most fundamental part in the whole chain of events :)

    1. No, no one is doing a Bilbo post yet, so that would be cool! No one is writing about Frodo either, if you happen to be wondering.... :-) Anyway, let me know here when you've got a post ready, and I'll let you know where to send it.
