Perhaps catching this fish is the end of his string of bad luck, and even if it isn't, he still has the satisfaction of his triumph, and those who laughed at him earlier can't laugh so much anymore.Hamlette (Rachel)https://www.blogger.com/profile/11961916847426233995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5587150608901957801.post-9394243655026793882014-07-24T03:22:41.674-04:002014-07-24T03:22:41.674-04:00It's interesting to see how the sea creatures ...It's interesting to see how the sea creatures are portrayed. Most of them are the "good guys," but the Old Man makes a point of recognizing the "bad guys" including the sharks. Like you mention, the story really is from his point of view, and the simple writing style fits it well.

I still can't decide if the ending is happy or sad. Bittersweet, I guess. There's definitely the idea there that he and Manolin are going to keep fishing, and maybe have more lucrative success. And if Hemingway didn't mean for it to be a writer struggling with his story, and the critics ripping it to shreds, well - he should have!

I just finished mine and put up a link.
