Maybe Mrs. Jennings sees that better because she's much older and has seen more illnesses, what with having raised two daughters?

I agree that Willoughby's greatest crime is his seducing, impregnating, and abandoning Eliza. Though he didn't know she was pregnant when he left. But you're right that he doesn't repent of this at all, just shrugs it off, for the most part.

Yeah, total drama queen (king?).Hamlette (Rachel)https://www.blogger.com/profile/11961916847426233995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5587150608901957801.post-69415647567606906692021-05-03T19:34:02.969-04:002021-05-03T19:34:02.969-04:00Ivy Miranda, yeah, probably.

When he really should just apologize and leave.
Elinor really is in the middle of everything, and I feel for her. And for Edward, Elinor was the link. Willoughby will use any tool. However, he had come to see about Marianne, he learnt she was better from a servant before he saw Elinor.

I've been noting my thoughts for the last few chapers.
43. Mrs Jennings still thinking Colonel Brandon is thinking about Elinor! I just find it odd that Elinor is so blind to the situation of Marianne's illness while Mrs Jennings who only sees what she wants and Colonel Brandon who is blinded by his love and past and has a meloncholy temperament are actually more accurate. Also, what a dramatic chapter ending climax.

44. Willoughby and Elinor both seem to seriously downplay that Willoughby seduced and left a 16 year old. He think because it was mutual and that he left his address or had thought he did it was fine. Elinor seems to think this softened this. Later she does bring it up later in another chaper to her mother and Marianne calling it "his first offense against virtue and the root of everything after." For me this is the true crime of his, misleading Marianne and then ditching her for money are merely lesser steps buy both these people reverse that. This is also just one whole non-apology. He is sorry she suffered but not enough for real repenting, his repenting is only because he did and is and will suffer or so he thinks. He is also sorry his reputation is ruined with them. All that aside, he does seem to know he should truly care about his actions, he's very defensive which I think shows he is not quite the hardened reprobate Wickham (shameless, no conscience)and Crawford (narcissist) are. Once I reread all JA novels, I want to categorize her villains, her jerks, her oddballs, her good men in my opinion.

And then another dramatic ending, he's a bit of a drama queen himself.Livia Rachellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02755623391278276925noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5587150608901957801.post-45346228737217793912021-04-30T18:12:02.878-04:002021-04-30T18:12:02.878-04:001. She doesn't ask questions, just listens.

2. Do you have any sympathy left for Willoughby by now? Do you think I'm being too harsh on him?

- He was totally leading Marianne on the entire time and when he left he owed her the truth. I still loathe him.Ivy Mirandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09742281977062799876noreply@blogger.com
